10:30-11:30 Get to Grips with Gimnazjum Grammar - Approaches and Activities to Take Away and Use Tomorrow, Daniel Brayshaw
(Sesja dla nauczycieli szkół gimnazjalnych)

According to results from the most recent analysis provided by the Examination Commission, the greatest weakness among gimnazjum exam candidates revolved around their knowledge and command of środki językowe – language means. This has therefore placed a clear demand on teachers to work on improving students’ performance in the vital area of grammar and vocabulary. But how can we do this whilst ensuring that we still focus on all the other areas so important for success, not least communication? This hands-on practical workshop will aim to provide participants with a myriad of easy to prepare, fun and memorable activities to address this question. We will look at how we can develop students’ grammatical accuracy and range along with their awareness of collocation and will also show some simple tips and strategies that can be applied on the day including to the transformation and translation tasks that appear in the exam. The session will be illustrated with material taken from Pearson’s Next Move, the 21st century course for 21st century students.

12:00-13:00 Make Matura Manageable – with the 3 Ms…, Sue Kay, Daniel Brayshaw
(Sesja dla nauczycieli szkół ponadgimnazjalnych)

Sue Kay

We believe that students learn best when a lesson combines engaging material that motivates with systematic and memorable exposure to language through a series of meaningful tasks. So Motivation, Memory and Meaning - 'the 3 Ms' - are our watchwords. In the session we will look at ways in which topics, texts and tasks can reflect these priorities and help you to prepare students better for the new Matura exam.

Daniel Brayshaw

Which Matura tasks do your students struggle with the most? How can we help them to improve in the areas they find most challenging, and at the same time encourage them feel positive about the process of preparing for Matura? Working with the most recent details of nationwide performance in the exam, this highly practical session will attempt to deal with these important questions. During the workshop, we will remind ourselves of some of the aspects of the new Matura format and task types, and how to make sure the students are successful on the big day.

This shared session will contain lots of easy to prepare practical ideas and tips, and will be illustrated with material taken from Pearson’s new Matura Focus course.
